Leonardi, Sophie; Leblond, Emilie; Le Blond, Samuel; Marchal, Paul.

How can we quantify impacts of contaminants in marine ecosystems? The ICON project ArchiMer
Hylland, Ketil; Burgeot, Thierry; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Lang, Thomas; Robinson, Craig D.; Svavarsson, Jorundur; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Gubbins, Matthew J..
An international workshop on marine integrated contaminant monitoring (ICON) was organised to test a framework on integrated environmental assessment and simultaneously assess the status of selected European marine areas. Biota and sediment were sampled in selected estuarine, inshore and offshore locations encompassing marine habitats from Iceland to the Spanish Mediterranean. The outcome of the ICON project is reported in this special issue as method-oriented papers addressing chemical analyses, PAH metabolites, oxidative stress, biotransformation, lysosomal membrane stability, genotoxicity, disease in fish, and sediment assessment, as well as papers assessing specific areas. This paper provides a background and introduction to the ICON project, by...

Quelles interactions ? Quelles conséquences ? ArchiMer
Cormon, Xochitl.
North Sea saithe (Pollachius virens) has high economic value for European fisheries. In recent years, North Sea saithe abundance has decreased, while abundance of hake (Merluccius merluccius), which was rarely fished in the North Sea, has increased dramatically in the area. This work investigates the nature of the ecological interactions between saithe and hake in the North Sea, in order to understand if recent hake emergence in this area could explain, at least partially, the recent decline of the saithe stock. The results obtained during this research suggested competitive interactions between saithe and hake predators in the area. In addition, this investigation revealed potential negative effects of hake on the resident saithe stock. Therefore, hake...

International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS2019-Q1). French cruise report ArchiMer
Lazard, Coline; Verin, Yves; Auber, Arnaud.
IBTS surveys (International Bottom Trawl Survey) are carried out within an international framework. Main countries bordering the North Sea participate to it according to the European Community regulations (EC N°1543/2000 and N° 1639/2001) which specify that countries from E.U. have to carry out surveys at sea in order to evaluate abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the IBTS survey is to have a diagnosis on the main commercial fish stock and to calculate abundances index by age for these species. This survey started in the years 70’s and gradually standardised. Since the years 80’s, a common protocol is implemented and used by all participants. The same fishing gear and the same working methods...

International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS2021-Q1) - French cruise report. ArchiMer
Lazard, Coline; Verin, Yves; Auber, Arnaud.
In 2021, the French NS-IBTS Q1 survey was conducted as part of the International Bottom Trawl Survey program carried out by main countries bordering the North Sea in order to assess abundance and stocks distribution, independently of commercial fisheries data. The first target of the NS-IBTS Q1 survey is to provide a diagnosis on the main commercial fish species by estimating their abundance per age. A standardized protocol is rigorously applied by all participants. The R/V Thalassa sampled the eastern part of the Channel and southern North Sea (until 56° N) from 19th January to 9th February 2021. During daily time, 56 hauls, lasting 30 minutes, have been carried out with a GOV bottom trawl. A total of 82 fish species have been collected, determined and...

ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Destombe, A.; Coppin, Franck; Koubbi, P.; Vaz, Sandrine; Le Roy, Didier; Carpentier, Audrey.
General introduction: The red mullet is among the fish that are the most popular and that have been known of for the longest amount of time. The Greeks and the Romans have left us in their literature famous pages in which they praise the quality and beautiful colours of their gurnards and their mulles. Also, the skin of this fish has been very popular since earliest antiquity: It is said that for the Romans, a beautiful fish was worth more than the man who had caught it! Moreover, at feasts, a red mullet was displayed in a vase to amuse the guests with the changes of colour (Bloch, 1793). The red rock mullet (Mullus surmuletus) is a benthic fish, which means it lives near the sea bottom. It is geographically present in the Atlantic Ocean from the coasts...

Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
DISPRO project aims to validate hydrodynamic models dispersion parameters by field data for the short-term (hours to week) and short distances (100 meters to 30 km). This project is based on a 2D instantaneous currents model with a mesh size of 110 m, coupled with high frequency field data collected in the release plume. At this step of the works, measurements confirm the reliability of the model during six hours following a release. This validation made possible developpement of models with known incertitude to simulate dispersion of dissolved substances in realistic conditions for normal or accidental situations in macrotidal seas.

Seasonal to hour variation scales in abundance and production of total and particle-attached bacteria in the open NW Mediterranean Sea (0-1000 m) ArchiMer
Mevel, G.; Vernet, M.; Goutx, M.; Ghiglione, J. F..
We present the vertical and temporal dynamics of total vs. particle-attached bacterial abundance and activity over a 5 week period under summer to autumn transition in NW Mediterranean Sea. At a weekly time scale, total bacterial biomass and production in the euphotic layers was significantly correlated with phytoplanktonic biomass. At an hourly time scale, total bacterial biomass responded very rapidly to chlorophyll a fluctuations, suggesting a tight coupling between phytoplankton and bacteria for resource partitioning during the summer-autumn transition. In contrast, no influence of diel changes on bacterial parameters was detected. Episodic events such as coastal water intrusions had a significant positive effect on total bacterial abundance and...
